A Treasure from Down Under: Engelhard Australia 1oz Standard E Logo Pressed Bars

Updated: Jan 5

Engelhard is a well-known name in the silver market. The company, which operated from 1902 to 2006, produced a variety of silver bars and ingots with different designs, sizes, and purities.

One of the most interesting and sought-after varieties is the Engelhard Australia 1oz standard E Logo pressed bar. This is a silver bar that was made by Engelhard’s Australian subsidiary, which operated from 1966 to 1986. It has a unique design and a distinctive pressed finish, unlike the cast finish of most other Engelhard bars. It also does not have a serial number engraved on it, unlike most other Engelhard bars.

[SET OF 3X TYPES/SERIES - EACH 500 MINTED] 1oz Engelhard Australia Silver Bars

In this blog post, we will explore the features, benefits, and availability of these rare and valuable silver collectibles, and the three different variations or series that were produced: Series 1, Series 2, and Series 3. We will also provide some tips on how to identify and authenticate them.

These bars have a smooth and shiny finish, with sharp edges and corners. They measure about 28 mm x 50 mm x 2 mm and weigh about 31.1 grams. They have a silver content of 99.9% and a silver-white color.

The design features the Engelhard logo inside a globe, the weight and purity, and a large E against a globe backdrop. The reverse side of the bar contains the Engelhard name marked in an upward diagonal slant with each series exhibiting slightly different characteristics and gradients. The design is simple and elegant, reflecting the company’s reputation for quality and excellence.

The pressed finish is achieved by stamping the molten silver with a die, which creates a unique but uniform design. The pressed finish gives them a crisp and clean appearance, unlike the rough and rustic appearance of poured bars.

The absence of a serial number on either side of the bar makes them unique and rare. Most Engelhard bars have serial numbers that indicate their production sequence, age, scarcity, and rarity. The bars without serial numbers are considered art bars and are highly sought after by collectors and investors.

Only three different variations of these standard production pressed E logo bars exist, each containing the same low mintage of just 500 units for a total of just 1,500 units produced across all three series. This makes any of the series a truly rare find and a Tier 1 bar by AllEngelhard standards, which is where we provide mintage information from.

Series 1 - 500 Minted

1st series Australian bar, detail not as refined as later 2nd and 3rd series bars. A keen eye will note the letter “G” matches that of 2nd series. The frosted reverse demonstrates two full hallmarks in an ascending diagonal pattern, characteristic of these Australian examples.

Series 2 - 500 Minted

2nd Series Australian bar, more reflective obverse surface finish. A keen eye will note the letter “G” matches that of the 1st series and that the stamping detail is more crisp. The matte finish reverse demonstrates two full hallmarks in an ascending diagonal pattern, characteristic of these Australian examples

Series 3 - 500 Minted

3rd series Australian bar, demonstrates a proof-like obverse surface finish. It is the most fully-refined of all variety and a keen eye will note the letter “G” is unique as it does not match that of the earlier bars. The frosted reverse demonstrates two full hallmarks in an ascending diagonal pattern, characteristic of these Australian examples.

These bars are a part of the history of Engelhard Industries, a world-renowned manufacturer of precious metals and chemicals that was founded in 1902 and acquired by BASF in 2006. Engelhard Australia was a subsidiary of Engelhard Industries that operated from 1966 to 1986, producing silver bars and ingots for the Australian and Asian markets. These bars are one of the only surviving examples of Engelhard's Australian offshoot and an important and collectible piece of Engelhard history.

These bars are a silver treasure from down under. They feature a unique pressed finish and a distinctive design. They are also rare and valuable, as well as historical and collectible. They have many features and benefits that make them desirable and attractive to silver collectors and investors.
