Engelhard 10oz CHUNKY MACHINED FINISHED Silver Bars

If you are a silver bar collector, you probably know Engelhard, one of the most renowned names in the precious metals industry. Founded in 1902 by Charles W. Engelhard, Sr., the company grew to become the world’s largest refiner and fabricator of platinum, gold, and silver, as well as a leader in specialty chemicals and materials.

Engelhard also produced a variety of silver bars, from large 1000oz bars for industrial and commercial use, to small fractional bars for retail and investment use. One of the most unique and relatively easily obtainable Engelhard silver products made is the 10oz Commercial 12th Series Silver Bar, which reflects the quality and reputation of Engelhard.

The 10oz Engelhard Commercial 12th Series Silver Bar: A Detailed Look

The 10oz Engelhard Commercial 12th Series Silver Bar is a scarce and unique item that was produced by Engelhard in the early 1980s. It is made of .999 fine silver and has a weight of 10 oz. It has a rectangular shape and a smooth finish, with rounded corners and edges and a thick body, which makes it unique to other Engelhard bars found on the secondary market today.

The front of the bar features a pressed design of the Engelhard name inside an elongated octagon. Below it shows the weight, purity, fineness, and a unique serial number that has a letter prefix followed by six numbers. The back of the bar shows a repeated Engelhard name diagonally 3 full times or, in some instances, contains a pebbled back with no repeating Engelhard logo. The satin pebbled finish gives the bar a unique texture.

The bar also has a distinctive feature that sets it apart from other Engelhard bars: the serial number variations. The serial numbers consists of seven digits, starting with a letter and followed by six numbers. The letter indicates one of three variations that were produced of this particular bar, each of which range greatly in estimated mintage. The 12th series bars have three variations: A, B, and C. The A variety bars have a P letter prefix on the serial number. This P prefix is among the rarest of the Chunky Machined Finish Engelhard 10oz Commercial 12th series bar and have an estimated mintage of less than 10,000 bars.

Variety B differs from Variety A in two ways. Instead of a P letter prefix, the serial number starts with a C letter prefix. Furthermore, the reverse of the bar contains a pebbled back with no repeating Engelhard logo. This particular bar was estimated at a mintage of just 50,000 bars made, making it 5x more common than Variety A, but still a relatively scarce bar.

This particular bar has an estimated mintage of less than 125,000 bars making it the most readily available bar of the three variations. This bar features a C letter prefix just as Variety B does, but it also brings back the pebbled Logo back, which can also be found on the Variety A bar.
