How Rare Are Engelhard MTB Liberty Trade Silver Bars?

If you are a silver bar collector, you probably know Engelhard, one of the most renowned names in the precious metals industry. Founded in 1902 by Charles W. Engelhard, Sr., the company grew to become the world’s largest refiner and fabricator of platinum, gold, and silver, as well as a leader in specialty chemicals and materials.

Engelhard also produced a variety of silver bars, from large 1000oz bars for industrial and commercial use, to small fractional bars for retail and investment use. One of the most unique and recognizable bars and rounds that the company produced were the Liberty Trade Silver pieces that were produced for Manfra, Tordella, & Brookes (MTB). While multiple companies were commissioned by MTB to produced pieces featuring the Statue of Liberty as the focus of the design, Engelhard produced some of the highest purity and some of the latest examples of such pieces. As such, they often demand high premiums on the secondary market, especially when the pieces are lower mintage that are rarely available.

Engelhard MTB Liberty Trade Silver Bars: A Closer Look

Engelhard produced three different sized bars featuring the MTB Liberty Trade design: 1oz, 5oz, and 10oz. Each bar features a consistent design with the respective weight markings and can be easily identified as Engelhard products when looking at the small E inside a box on the reverse of the bar. Each bar comes with its own unique serial number and each weight class varies in estimated mintage (according to AllEngelhard).
