Up for sale, we have an original EMPTY Engelhard American Prospector Plastic Tube. These tubes were what the vintage American Prospector silver rounds were sometimes issued in back in the 1980's and they are becoming increasingly difficult to come by and more and more sought out by collectors who are putting together their Prospector Date sets/collections.
According to AllEngelhard, it is estimated that there were 75,000 rounds minted of each of the seven types for a total of 525,000 American Prospector 1oz silver rounds. Assuming these rounds were filled 25 per tube, there would only be a maximum of 21,000 plastic tubes that were issued of which many have likely been disposed of, damaged, or lost. However, based on our experience, many of the earlier issued rounds from 1982-1984 were originally issued in plastic cellophane factory seals rather than in plastic tubes leading us to believe that there were likely 12,000 or fewer tubes originally issued with significantly fewer suviving examples remaining. This may, in part, explain the enormous premium these otherwise ordinary plastic tubes regularly sell for on the secondary market.
The item up for consideration does not contain any silver rounds, but it can snugly hold a total of 25x American Prospector 1oz silver rounds, which is how the original tubes of rounds were issued. Though the tubes were originally meant to hold 25 rounds, they were done so with force and were often taped shut to hold the caps in place. As such, there is frequently residue and discoloration from tape that can be seen around the edge of the cap and, on the rare occasion, some small cracks in the plastic.
This is an empty plastic tube containing NO bullion coins. The plastic tube is decades old and may contain some imperfections consistent with its age including discoloration, scratches, small cracks, or other similar blemishes. Please closely inspect photos of an item in similar condition to the one you will receive.
